How to use My Tax Expert

Overview #

Welcome to the Papercare help section. This guide explains how to use the My Tax Expert feature. My Tax Expert answers UK tax questions – covering areas such as corporation tax, VAT, capital allowances, self assessment, capital gains, and payroll – using authoritative sources you choose. It shows every working and citation, and can turn its answer into a branded client report and a plain-English client email.

Step 1: Open My Tax Expert #

From the left navigation panel in the Firm Dashboard or Client Dashboard, click on “My Tax Expert”.
This will open the My Tax Expert page.

Step 2: Ask Your Tax Question #

Type your question into the chat box, in the same words the client used.
You can ask about a wide range of UK tax matters, including:
Corporation tax
VAT
Capital allowances
Self assessment
Capital gains
Payroll and employment

Step 3: Choose Your Sources #

Before submitting, select the authoritative sources you want My Tax Expert to search, such as:
GOV.UK
HMRC
LEGISLATION.GOV.UK
ACAS
Case Law
TAX.ORG.UK
Only the sources you select will be used to answer your question.
Press the Send button to submit your question.

Step 4: Review the Answer and Workings #

My Tax Expert returns its answer with full workings, presented in clear tables.
Depending on your question, these may include areas such as tax relief, benefit-in-kind charges, running costs, and VAT.
A list of the exact sources cited is provided so you can check the workings.

Step 5: Compare Scenarios #

Where relevant, you can compare different scenarios using the tabs provided.
For example, business use only, private use at basic rate, or private use at higher rate.
The figures recalculate for each scenario, with the formula shown behind every result.

Step 6: Generate a Client Report #

To turn the answer into a client deliverable, ask My Tax Expert to create a report (for example, “make this a report for my client”).
The report is generated with your firm’s name on the cover page, a contents page, and the relevant sections.
Click Edit Report to rewrite any line, add your own notes, reorder or remove sections, or adjust table columns.
The contents page renumbers itself automatically as you edit.
Choose whether to include a cover page and an index page, then click Download as PDF.

Step 7: Draft a Client Email #

To explain the answer to your client, ask My Tax Expert to draft an email (for example, “draft an email explaining this simply”).
A plain-English client email is generated for you.
You can copy the email or open it in your inbox. Nothing is sent without you.
